How to report a crime in London
If you’ve been affected by crime, it’s up to you whether you want to report it to the police or not. You don’t have to have reported a crime to the police to get support from us.
There are different ways to report your crime, depending on when or where it happened.
Call 999 and ask for the police if a crime is in progress or someone is in immediate danger.
If you need emergency help and it’s not safe for you to talk, call 999 and listen to the instructions from the operator.
You can respond by coughing or tapping the phone if you can. If it is not safe to talk or respond, you can press 55 on your keypad when prompted to let the operator know the call is genuine.
If there’s no immediate danger and the crime is no longer in progress, please don’t call 999. Instead, you can:
- Report the crime online
- Report by calling 101
- Report by going to your local police station
If you’ve witnessed or been the victim of crime that happened within the City of London Square Mile, you can report it to the City of London Police.
If you’ve witnessed or been the victim of crime on any of the following, you can report it to the British Transport Police:
- The National Rail network
- London Underground

- London Overground
- Docklands Light Railway
