What is restorative justice?
Restorative justice is a process that provides a safe space for those harmed by crime to communicate with those who have caused the harm.
It gives victim of crime a voice and holds the person who caused them harm to account for the hurt they have caused, enabling those affected to find a positive way forward.
Restorative justice is a confidential, safe process that can provide answers and empower you to move forward after crime.
How does Restorative Justice work?
Both the person affected by crime and the person who has caused the crime must agree, before restorative justice can proceed. The process is completely voluntary for both sides.
Communication doesn’t have to happen face-to-face. You can choose:
- write and receive letters;
- participate in a phone call;
- have a video-meeting;
- or a support worker can relay information on your behalf.
A support worker can talk through options with you, to help you decide if restorative justice is right for you.
The support worker will help you with any questions or concerns you have around the process, as well as ensuring the situation is safe.
Restorative Justice offers the chance for you to express thoughts and feelings that you may not have been able to share through the traditional criminal justice system.
Can restorative justice take place straight away?
In most cases, police investigations or court proceedings must be completed before a restorative justice process can begin.
However, you can access the service any time after this, whether the crime is recent or historic.
How can I access restorative justice?
One of our support workers will then contact you within two working days to discuss your needs and initial questions.
Your support worker will guide you through the process, clearly explaining the next steps.
