How can crime affect young people
Children and young people can react differently to adults after crime. They might not understand what’s happened, or how they’re feeling. They might also blame themselves, even though it’s never their fault.
That’s why we offer a support service that specialises in working with young people.
The service is independent of the police. Young people don’t need to have reported anything to the police to get support.
Our Support Workers will work with the person affected, in a way that suits them based on their needs.
More about this service
Our service offers young people a safe space to share their feelings and talk about how the crime is affecting them.
Our Support Workers will:
- work at a pace that suits the person they’re supporting;
- let them choose where they get support: at home, at school or somewhere else they feel safe;
- help them make their own decisions;
- never judge them or tell them what to do;
- work with them to agree a support plan;
- support them to express themselves and stand up for their rights; and
- introduce them to specialist support services, if needed.
Our support can help young people to:
- feel safer;
- understand what's happened;
- feel more in control;
- get the right support when they need it; and
- move forward with daily life.
Our Support Workers won't take any action a young person isn't comfortable with or share information without their permission.
If a young person is under 13, we need a parent or carer's permission to speak with them.
